One thing I’ve noticed is that Z and I get very antsy when we fall into a mundane routine. Wake up, get dressed, go to school, come home, watch TV, eat dinner, go to sleep. It’s not a bad routine, but it’s boring. We start to get easily annoyed with one another and both of our attitudes flare up. So to ease the tempers, I like to throw in surprise mommy and son date nights.
This week we enjoyed our mommy and me date night at Kona Grill and discovered fresh ingredients, made from scratch; the way it should be!
On our date nights we get dressed up, do our hair and enjoy each other while chowing down on some seriously delicious grub. Kona Grill is the perfect spot for this because it’s simultaneously fancy and casual. They also have such a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts; so much more than the sushi restaurant most people believe it to be.
I started with potstickers — seared chicken and vegetable dumplings, asian slaw, with traditional soy dipping sauce. They are light, yet packed with flavor. They’ve got a tiny spice to them, but nothing over powering.

Z enjoyed his kids’ meal bento box. He had the chicken tenders with mac & cheese and sweet potato fries. He was literally licking his plate and dipping his fingers in the ketchup saying, “this is delicious” over and over again. It was hilarious and adorable.
To me, the cutest part of the kids’ meal is the hand-crafted bear made from an orange! I can’t even get all the strings off when I peel one, and these magicians can transform it into a tiny animal.
I’m a big sushi fan, so I had to order a rainbow roll, but I also wanted to explore their other diverse menu options. I opted for a NY strip steak cooked medium rare with house mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Besides being absolutely amazing to taste, this thing was MASSIVE! I easily got three full meals out of this one item. I suggest you come hungry so you can truly enjoy this dining experience from beginning to end. You can’t really go wrong with anything on their menu. They have 40+ sauces crafted from scratch every single day. That kind of dedication to freshness and diversity is unmatched.
These plates had Z on some expert negotiating skills. He ate his dinner, swindled some of mine and even saved room for dessert! I’ve gotta say, I don’t mind dinner-table, negotiation snuggles in the slightest though. I consider it bonding, ha.
As with any date night, we finished our yummy meal with the best dish of all: fudge brownie. This soft and gooey brownie was more like half a sheet than a slice. It was topped with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream, raspberries, and chocolate and caramel sauce drizzle. As you can see by the look on his face, he was about that brownie life! Between the two of us, we could only finish half of it, so I recommend sharing. What a sweet way to end our date night!
We ended up spending almost 2 hours at Kona Grill enjoying our yummy dinner and having lots of snuggles. The weather was amazing so we sat outside on the patio where they had comfortable seating, a waterfall and even a fire pit. We were having so much fun, we didn’t want to leave! Now that we’re signed up for the Konavore rewards program, we’ll be going back more to cash in on the amazing perks that come with it.
